Teach Yourself Martial Arts: Is It Possible?

Can you teach yourself martial arts? Many people will say it is impossible to learn on your own. Martial Arts is best learned when you are learning with an instructor, but is not impossible to learn on your own. Let’s say you don’t live near a dojo or you just don’t have the time to make it to the dojo because you are busy. In this post we will explore some of the things you can learn on your own and things you should learn with a partner or instructor.

Techniques
Straight punch, knife-hand block, jab, and roundhouse kick are all examples of martial arts techniques you can teach yourself. Many are unsuccessful though because they do not learn properly. It is important to be detail-oriented when learning techniques. Being mindful of hand and feet placement, not having a low enough stance, and twisting your body when punching for more power are all examples of details that often get missed when you teach yourself martial arts. You must work with a training program that focuses on details when teaching yourself martial arts. Not having an instructor present will be the biggest challenge when teaching yourself martial arts. An instructor also can show what success looks like and can correct you when something is incorrect. When teaching yourself martial arts, make sure you get a big mirror or record yourself executing techniques so you can compare yourself to training videos.

Combinations
Combinations allow you to put together the techniques you learn. For example a straight punch to a front kick would be an example of a combination. Much like techniques, make sure you have a method of recording yourself or seeing yourself execute the techniques so you can correct yourself when something is incorrect.

Kata/Forms
Katas are choreographed routines that showcase combinations and techniques together. Katas can be performed as a group but is usually executed by yourself. Since it does not require another person, it is something you can learn on your own. Here is an example of a Kata executed well by Gold Medalist Damian Hugo Quintero at 2015 Baku European Games:

What will be challenging to teach yourself?

Sparring
Sparring is a key part of learning martial arts as it allows you to practice the techniques you are learning with someone else. It is the closest you can get to practicing martial arts as if it were a real-life situation and the closest you can get to fighting someone without actually fighting. Sparring also helps with conditioning as it is a great cardiovascular exercise. Running drills, jumping jacks, and using a punching bag are great ways to condition when you don’t have the ability to spar. Focus, reaction time, balance, and speed are a few of the many key aspects you learn while sparring.

Self Defense
You can teach yourself self-defense techniques but it will be a challenge if you do not have anyone to practice on. It is recommended that you include someone else when teaching yourself martial arts but not until you have learned correct technique from an instructor. Executing self-defense techniques incorrectly can severely injure someone.

Martial Arts Online: How to Reduce Stress

Life gets busy! And when life gets busy, it gets stressful! Work, Family, and all other important aspects of life take up your time and energy. Balancing out your life and finding a way to relieve stress is important to stay healthy.  In this post we will discuss how you can reduce stress with martial arts online.

Learn to Manage Stress Within
People cope with stress differently but one thing that is certain is stress is within. External triggers like driving in traffic, large work load, and lack of sleep may set off the stressors but ultimately it is within. It is important to first figure out what causes stress before exploring how to reduce stress. When you learn martial arts online, you condition yourself to tolerate stress. Learning Martial Arts Online teaches you to focus and diligently work towards something as you move up in belt ranks.  The feeling of accomplishment helps manage stress. Let’s say you work 60 hours a week and you have identified that working long hours is your stressor. You make a plan to write down where all your time goes by writing an hour-by-hour plan eventually leading you to eliminate unnecessary work and save 15 hours of your week. How much better would you feel to be able to gain two hours a day to enjoy a hobby or spend time with friends or family? The plan to develop is provided when you learn martial arts online by the provider of the training. As you put in the work, move up in belt ranks, and see yourself progressing, stress is reduced and you gain confidence. Martial arts online helps you to maintain a healthy body but also teaches you to work hard and achieve rewards.

Physical and Mental Development
Martial arts online promotes physical wellness through rigorous training but also mental wellness as it requires discipline to execute techniques and routines with correct form. It is not a workout that requires you to turn your mind off. Too many people withhold stress when they should find ways to relieve it. Online Martial Arts boosts confidence through conditioning, learning how to take care of yourself with self defense, and also teamwork through encouragement of helping others to progress. It is imperative to have some sort of accountability when learning martial arts online as it is much more difficult to stay focused and persistent when you do not have an instructor physically with you. Learn a martial art is beyond oneself. Often time martial arts have a creed to live by that encourages a person to think beyond themselves. Having vision for something beyond yourself helps you to appreciate life. Online Martial Arts build teamwork spirit and respect for yourself, others, and life in general.

InternetMartialArts.com Student Creed:
To achieve happiness, through a balance of life.
My mission, to improve all that I am, and to always help others.
Forever seek to develop, knowledge of the mind, honesty in the heart, and strength in the body.

Limited Time Not a Stressor with Martial Arts Online:
The feeling of not having enough time to do all that you want is extremely stressful. Time is a limited resource and there is only so many things we can do with that time. If you work a lot or have a family, time for yourself is even more limited. You can train on your own time when you learn martial arts online. Because you can learn martial arts online 24/7! A marial arts class can provide only so many classes and when training at a dojo you have to fix your schedule to the limited amount of classes available. That can be stressful!

Tips for Learning Karate at Home

Use Your Karate at Home Resources

What props do you have to enhance your karate at home experience? Practice correct technique by starting off slow and building up speed when you know your executing correctly. Use a chair or wall for assistance. Buy a punching bag or use a firm pillow to practice your strikes, punches, and kicks!

Turn your Home into a Karate Dojo!
Get a large mirror so you can see yourself when practicing karate at home. This will help you to correct yourself. You can also record yourself using a webcam or smartphone camera if you do not have a large mirror. Reviewing your recording will help you to identify what you are doing wrong.

If you are learning from an online karate program, find ways to connect your technology to your large tv screen. Now days you can use something like Google Chromecast or Apple TV to wirelessly mirror what’s on your mobile devices onto the big screen. You can likely buy an adapter from your local technology store to connect the device directly into your TV via the HDMI port as well!

Prevent Injury by Warming Up!
The last thing you want to do is injury yourself while practicing karate at home! Karate develops both the body and mind, so it is important to prepare both. Make sure you warm up by taking at least 15 minutes to prepare your mind and body.

Start with Seiza to prepare your mind. Sit on your knees and close your eyes in complete silence for 2 minutes. Do this before and after practicing karate at home.

Why Online Martial Arts Does Not Work!

Many will argue that Online Martial Arts training does not work.

A dojo training experience is ideal, but what about for those who do not have access to a dojo, or maybe do not have the time to train at one daily? I would like to argue that online martial arts can be a great alternative solution if you pick the right program.

Reasons Why Many Online Martial Arts Programs Do Not Work:

Too Much Focus On Working Out Rather Than Correct Technique:
If you search Online Martial Arts on Youtube you will see many workout videos. Martial Arts is a fantastic way to get exercise, but that is only half of an effective martial arts program. You cannot get a black belt with conditioning alone. You need correct technique and a structured program! Unfortunately, correct technique is difficult to learn when you don’t have anyone in-person to assist you. An effective online martial arts program should allow you to connect with an instructor and get feedback for your progress. Many online martial arts programs incorporate online belt testing that requires you to record yourself using a webcam or smartphone/tablet camera. This is a key feature that should be in an effective martial arts program!

Not Enough Structure:
Martial Arts requires a lot of time and effort. You can only go so far watching a series of DVDs. A typical dojo experience requires you to learn and complete a series of steps to progress in belt rankings. For example, you have to learn fundamentals, assist new students, and take a written and physical test. When training martial arts online, look for a program that brings all elements of a dojo experience. Typically a training website or App is helpful as it will allow you to train from anywhere you have internet access. Key features like time tracking, ability to interact with an instructor or students can make a drastic difference! There should be a series of events that need to be completed before progressing.

Learn Karate at Home By Yourself

IMG_7252.PNGLearning martial arts in a dojo is great but maybe you live a busy lifestyle or don’t live near a dojo. The advancement of technology makes learning karate by yourself possible!

Here are a few key features to look for in an effective karate at home program:

Personalized learning
Ask yourself what you need to effectively learn karate by yourself. Some people learn by reading while some learn by watching, and others learn by doing. As you look for online martial arts options, make sure it supports your ideal learning method. Additionally, what are the requirements? Do you need a DVD player? Internet? Computer? It is important to  train with a program where you can get feedback and improve, especially because you do not have the benefit of a nearby Sensei or instructor. A series of videos alone will not be helpful if you are practicing incorrectly. Look for a program that allows an instructor to see your form via webcam or recordings so you know how you can improve.

Accountability
The benefit of learning karate at home is that you can learn at your own pace. The challenge is the ability to stay focused. Make sure your program motivates you to hold yourself accountable. Many online martial arts programs require you to schedule touch bases with an instructor/Sensei.  It is great if the program fosters a community that allows you to connect with other martial artists to hold each other accountable and grow together. Many dojos require higher belt ranked students to mentor or assist lower belt students in order to advance. Big bonus if your karate at home program adopts a similar method of learning and teaching.

Belt Testing
Karate wouldn’t be karate without the ability to eventually become a Black Belt. Check to see if your karate at home program incorporates belt testing. Whether it be testing via webcam, or connecting with a local dojo, make sure the program allows you to progress in belt rankings!
