The Essentials for Learning Karate at Home

IMG_6788.PNG

For this post we will look at ways to effectively learn karate at home by discussing the essentials needed in an online martial arts program.

Here are a few things you will need to address in order to effectively learn karate at home:

Essential #1: Detailed Training Instructions.
You can never over emphasize the details. There is a difference between an energetic martial arts video that shows an instructor kicking and punching with lightning speed and an online martial arts instructor that takes the time to go over details. Look for an online martial arts program that showcases the technique with speed, but also takes the time to slow things down and go over the details. You should also have the ability to communicate with the instructor via phone call, online messaging, or video chat.

Essential #2: Ability to Interact.
Karate is best learned when you can train with someone else. When learning online, think about training together with someone else or look for an online karate program that has a mentor program. A mentor program requires advanced belt students to help new online karate students to progress. A good online program will allow you to connect with another martial artist to get feedback and share learns. Some online martial arts programs will even allow you to travel to the physical location of the martial arts studio to train in person or compete in tournaments as well.

Why Learning Karate at Home is a Great Idea!

Convenient Location and Timesavings
According to wnyc.org, the average commute time to and from work is about an hour a day. Add in trips for errands and evening activities and time spent commuting can really add up. What could you do with an hour a day?  Learning Karate at home with online martial arts is great because it does not take a lot of time and effort to start training. Typically all you need is a computer, tablet, or smart phone, access to internet and the will to get going!

Personalized Learning
Learning in large groups is not the most effective way to learn! Learning Karate at home with an online martial arts program allows you to stop, repeat, and proceed at your convenience. If you are having trouble with a technique, you can practice it for as long as you would like without getting left behind. If you are an advanced student, you don’t have to wait for others. Be sure to find a program that allows the instructor to see your progress. Whether it be through periodic video conferences, or videos you submit, it is important for an instructor to see you execute techniques and share feedback.

Family Bonding
Busy lifestyles make it difficult to take time to connect with family. Learning Karate at home is a great family activity. Not only is it a great workout, but is a great way to develop confidence in children. You can teach leadership by allowing older children to mentor younger siblings. If a child is not listening, you can take away their belt until they behave. Most importantly, you can learn together!

Why Parents Love Online Martial Arts for Homeschool Physical Education

Homeschool Martial Arts

According to National Home Education Research Institute, there are about 2.2 million home educated students in the United States. That number is expected to grow by 2 – 8% annually. As more parents teach homeschool education, there will be more demand for ways to engage and develop homeschooled students.

Here are a few reasons why online martial arts is a great way to engage your homeschooled children:

Online Martial Arts as a Family Activity:
Martial Arts can involve all family members.  Often times parents cheer from the sideline to watch their children participate in sports. Martial Arts as a Homeschool Physical Education is a great way to bond with your children as it is something that everyone can participate in. It is also a great way for siblings to demonstrate leadership skills if you have more than one child learning together. The children that progress in their belt ranks quicker can help the lower-belt ranks.

Homeschool Physical Education All The Time
Unlike many other sports, martial arts can be learned year round.  Martial arts can be great as is, but is also great as an after school program or a great complement to existing sports. Online martial arts programs are accessible anywhere, saving you time any money without having to commute.

Customized Learning
Online Martial Arts develops  key skills like discipline, focus, and respect. A parent can identify key behaviors based on their children’s needs and customize the learning experience. For example, if you would like to develop focus, you can use a prop to direct the child to punch or kick a certain area repeatedly, or do a dodging drill game like the one below.

3 Online Martial Arts Myths Debunked

Martial Arts Can Only Be Learned in a Dojo
The dojo experience is one that cannot be replaced, but it is not the only way to learn. Ever been in a large classroom and feel like you are not getting individualized help in your development? Online learning is a great alternative to learn at your own pace and never feel as if you are being left behind or waiting for others to catch up. You have complete control of your learning experience!

You Cannot get a Black Belt with Online Martial Arts
An effective online martial arts program provides all the content you need to learn on your own and take your test online. There is a difference between a series of youtube videos that provide martial arts cardio exercises and a structured online martial arts program that provides invaluable content, ways to track progress, online belt testing, and the ability to get feedback from an instructor. Ask yourself what does an ideal martial arts experience look like in a dojo, and does the online program you are considering have elements of that dojo experience?

You Need a Sensei Present
Interaction with other martial artists and the ability to get feedback from an instructor is key to development. Many online martial arts programs allow you to message other martial artists and record yourself via webcam or smartphone/tablet camera to notify the Sensei of your progress and get feedback. Two-way communications is key. An effective online martial arts program is more than a series of videos. It should provide a platform to communicate with others and develop together.

How Online Martial Arts Will Help You In The Dojo

Online_Martial_Arts_and_Dojo

The Dojo is the ultimate place for learning martial arts! Many people will not consider learning martial arts anywhere else.

What if I told you, online martial arts can help you to succeed in the dojo?

Here are a few reasons why:

Details
Details can be lost with the teacher to student ratio being so drastic. Giving personal attention to all students with different needs is challenging when you have one to three teachers and plenty of students. Online learning allows you to learn at your own pace. Stop and repeat the content until you get the details.

Never Miss A Class
Learning online martial arts allows you to learn from anywhere you have internet. Learn martial arts from home when you are sick at home, unable to make it to the dojo, or busy and cannot fit a visit to the dojo. Additionally, many options allow you to download videos to your device to store and access from anywhere. Follow along and learn martial arts. If you aren’t geared up to practice, watch and get the techniques down.

Practice Makes Perfect
Not everyone may have time to make it to the dojo everyday, but what if you took sometime at home to practice martial arts on the days you cannot make it to the dojo? Partner with your Sensei to discuss some techniques to practice at home.

3 Ways to Improve Focus when Learning Online

Focus_Homeschool_Onlinelearning

Online learning gives you the flexibility to learn from anywhere at anytime. Unfortunately, lack of focus and discipline prevent many from progressing with an online learning program.

Here are a three ways to improve focus when homeschooling and learning online:

1) Take a few minutes to prepare you mind by sitting down and closing your eyes in silence. Take deep breaths and slowly breath out.  Repeat for 2-5 minutes. This helps your mind to acknowledge the time to learn.

2) Turn off any technology that does not support the online learning experience. Ever find yourself jumping between the TV, laptop, smart phone,  tablet? Use only what you need to learn and prevent the constant restlessness.

3) Set a time limit to save time and maximize your learning experience. If you allow yourself more time than you need, you will likely get distracted. Setting a time limit helps you to focus. Ever wake up late for something important and surprise your self at how fast you got ready? According to the Parkinson’s Law, “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion”. If you wait until the last minute, it only takes you a minute to do it 🙂

How Online Learning Increases Information Retention.

Retaining Information with Online Learning

According to eLearningindustry.com’s Infographic, eLearning has the power to increase information retention by up to 60%. eLearning allows you to access information from anywhere you have technology.

Here are a few things to look for when you are looking into online learning options:

Structure

A structured platform is important to keep you on course. Look for an online solution that allows you to login with a personal I.D. to access a series of materials. Take Youtube as an example, you can find plenty of great content, but limited structure can prevent you from getting the best learning experience. You wouldn’t learn in a classroom setting with no curriculum, the same should go for online learning. Structure and a path to completion is important for retaining information

Motivation

Achievements are important to give you something to strive for. A certification at the end of the program would be an example of an achievement to keep you motivated. Engagement is key. Online learning requires a lot of self-motivation. Look for ways the program will keep you engaged. Bonus material for completing certain sections, or getting extra benefits for completing a certain amount of hours are all examples of achievements to keep you engaged.

Feedback

Any personal development solution is best when you have a partner. Look for an online program that allows you to interact with another user or a teacher. This will prevent you from interpreting and learning incorrectly. A professional athlete never gets to where they are without a coach and a brilliant students needs a teacher to cultivate their learning. The same goes for online learners. You can only make it so far on your own.
